Finding the Crac in Cracow
Cracow or Krakow? Both in use - sometimes on the same bus. Pronounced Krak - o by the Polish and Krak - off by everyone else. Easyjet has started flying direct from Luton so go there now before the stag/hen parties arrive. If you are a member of such a party please do not read on and go to Temple Bar instead..........
Obviously we can only recommend one as we only stayed in one. It was tremendous value. Hotel Pollera is very central, traditional and unspoilt. Only 40 euro per night including breakfast for single room and not much more for a double (off peak). See the link below:
Strangely no waiter/waitress ever writes down an order so you can end up with what you haven't ordered. One of our party ordered fish of the day and was presented with sirloin steak. Here are our top choices: 1. Cherubino, ul. sw. Tomasza 15 Polish/Tuscan cuisine. I had superb wild salmon served with asparagus. 2. Chlopskie Jadio, ul. sw. Agnieszki 1 (Peasants' kitchen) Traditional Polish. Very cheap, ordered twenty things from the menu. Mushrooms and black pudding terrific, I had to swerve the lard though. Great bread. 3. Cafe Camelot, ul. sw. Tomasza 17 More of a daytime place, next door to Cherubino. Salads for around £2 . Nice atmosphere. Yesterday's "Times" if you need to catch up.
Be careful of the Polish beer it's very strong. The ubiquitous Zyweic is a pale lager of 5.8% strength and very quaffable it is too. 1. Alchemia, ul. Estery 5 Very hip hang out in Kazimierz. Ended up there at 3am listening to something called Pink Freud. 2. CK Browar, ul. Podwale 6-7 Brewery pub established 1996. Four or five beers brewed on the premises. Including dark lager with a cheeky 7% strength. 3. Indigo, ul. Florianski 26 Central cavernous cellar hit with occasional live music. Jazz very big in Cracow.
We hired a guide from the net. Four hours for 250 zl (about 6 zl to £). See Wawel Castle, St. Mary's church, St. Francis d'Asisi church, Leonardo da Vinci's "Lady with an Ermine", University.
Best sites for further info: Many Internet cafes in Cracow centre. One hour surf time only 3 zl.
