There are similarities with 2004 when I had a substantial bet on Greece to win Euro 2004 at 66/1 and ended up with a modest profit at the end of the calendar year. This year featured an excellent World Cup, including a decent bet on Italy to win at 10/1 and again just a modest annual profit. I have to be pleased with the yearend outcome, however, as I had it all to do thanks to a disastrous start and a mountain to climb by mid-May. The bet of the year was undoubtedly R L Moore to win the jockeys' championship and these wagers at 16/1, 6/1, 11/2 and 7/2 provided great interest, for those involved, throughout the flat season, even though he was nearly 50 wins clear at the death. Well done Ryan. Sports arbitrage - particularly during the World Cup - made a significant contribution to profits for the first time. This is unlikely to be a consistent earner however but will have its use during major tournaments. Looking ahead to 2007, overall success could depend on a certain striker banging-in a few more goals. Win or lose, if you don't already know about this you'll hear more at a later date! Mike Quigley, January 2007 Long term net profit (after tax when applicable): 1996 to 2006 inclusive: +12.73%
